Not quite a movement, not quite a case, but rather both at once - the Altiplano 38 mm watch is a unique concept, and resolutely proud of its status as one of the thinnest and most elegant mechanical timepieces in the world. Blending hand-wound calibre and external features into a single concept, the watch has been designed as a whole unit and is only 3.65 mm thick. The culmination of over half a century of virtuoso craftsmanship in the field of ultra-thin watchmaking, a domain in which Piaget reigns supreme, this luxury watch symbolises all the excellence of the brand’s two fully-integrated Manufactures, where the professions of watchmaker, case builder and designer have overlapped to bring to life this masterpiece of reliability and precision. The secret of this extreme thinness lies in fact in the very concept of the case, the back of which also serves as the mainplate. Merging the calibre with the case, the mainplate has been machine-tooled to accommodate the mechanical components. This most complex of structures has also necessitated the reverse construction of the movement, with bridges fitted on the dial side, thus rendering them visible and so contributing to the watch’s aesthetic appeal. Forming an elegant contrast to the pink gold of the case, the bevelled and satin-finished “sunburst”-motif bridges have a black surface treatment. To gain vital millimetres, the whole mechanism and hand system is contained within the thickness of the balance, with an off-centre hours and minutes display as a consequence of this, perfectly attuned to the emblematic style codes of the Piaget Altiplano collection. These codes are further enhanced by the gear-train revealed to the onlooker’s gaze, seeming to invite wearers of this luxury watch to delve into the heart of this supremely delicate and technically complex mechanism. Adapting to the extremely reduced space available, Piaget designed a suspended barrel, held in place by a single bridge on the dial side, unlike conventional barrels, which are also attached on the mainplate side. However, this unusual system does nothing to hamper the mechanism's capacity, as the ultra-thin Piaget Altiplano 38 mm model boasts a generous power reserve of around 48 hours!
