In the early 1960s, Piaget’s creative dash blazed a conspicuous trail across the realm of luxury watches.
Luxury watches stitched in gold
Piaget’s iconic ultra-thin movements transformed the aesthetics of watchmaking forever, but its famous gold bracelets also have a starring role in the story. The Manufacture has worked ceaselessly to keep alive the extremely rare skills required for crafting watch bracelets in gold, and continues to develop its expertise so as to – even today – create luxury watches that are both unique and bear the recognisable imprint of Piaget. Each stage of creating a gold watch is carried out in the Maison’s own workshops. The chainmakers’ work is particularly fascinating, as they fashion, assemble, polish and satin-brush the gadroons and links to create a remarkably supple watch bracelet in gold.
When they set out to create a magnificent mesh of links for a gold watch bracelet, the artisans take one thread of gold and work it like couturiers, twisting and knitting the precious metal before delicately soldering it in hundreds of places. Depending on the design of the finished luxury watch, the gold bracelet may also be set with diamonds. In that case, all the consummate skills of the artisans come into play to ensure that the stones sit flawlessly on the gold links and the bracelet falls perfectly around the wrist.
